The "someday" myth

Hello Reader,

1. A quick word from Zach

We all tell ourselves some version of the same story: someday things will calm down, free up, or finally get easier. But while we’re waiting on that imaginary future, real life keeps moving right in front of us.

2. Something worth listening to

This podcast with Tim Ferriss will challenge you to think about whether you’re actually living now, or just postponing life for some imagined future version of it.

3. Something worth thinking about

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

~ The Preacher - Ecclesiastes 11:9

4. Something worth trying

Write down one thing you keep pushing off to someday, then ask yourself three questions:

  1. What do I keep putting off for 'someday' that I should actually be pursuing today?
  2. Are the 'someday' constraints I’ve been believing even real?
  3. How could I get creative to start moving toward 'someday' right now?

That's all for now.

P.S. As I plan for future issues of Dear Sam, I'd love your input. If I were to go deeper into one of the following, which would you choose? Hit reply, and let know!

  • Reclaiming time and margin
  • Increasing profits for the business
  • Learning to multiply time through delegation
  • Leading at home and at work
  • Something else?

To thriving,

Zach Wise

What is "Dear Sam", anyway? This column started with a real person — a friend and client named Sam. I write each issue with him in mind, and with you in mind, too.

Dear Sam Reader, 1. A quick word from Zach I feel the pull toward bigger, better, faster all the time. But the more I sit with it, the more I’m realizing that not every urgent feeling is a faithful one - and not everything worth building can be rushed. 2. Something worth listening to “Embracing a Generational Strategy” - Church and Family Life This is a fitting companion to this issue because it pushes us to think beyond immediate results and recover a longer horizon. Faithful work is often...

Dear Sam Reader, 1. A quick word from Zach It’s easy to tell yourself you’ll build margin later. But if you don’t intentionally build a business with room for family, church, sickness, emergencies, and the unexpected, you may wake up one day inside a profitable cage of your own making. 2. Something worth listening to This week, check out the EntreLeadership episode, “The Real Reason You’ll Never Grow Your Business.” It’s a fitting companion to this topic because it gets right to the heart of...

Hey Reader, 1. A quick word from Zach This week, I’m wrestling with a question a lot of Christian men in business quietly carry: should you try to grow your business as much as you can, or keep it intentionally small? I don’t think the deepest issue is growth or restraint by itself, but the motive underneath either choice. 2. Something worth reading Read Proverbs 14:23, Proverbs 16:8, Matthew 25:14-30, 1 Timothy 6:6-19, and Matthew 6:19-34 in that order. Together, these passages surface the...
